5 things to ask before you book a session with a new therapist
5 things to ask before you book a session with a new therapist
1. What does a typical session look like?
Ask how they structure sessions.
Do they guide most of the conversation, or let you lead? Is there homework between sessions?
See if their rhythm fits your style.
2. Have you worked with people like me?
Bring up what matters most to you — maybe your community, a specific issue, or a treatment type.
Ask them to elaborate on the experience they have with it. You want someone who gets you.
3. What is your communication style?
Some therapists are gentle and reflective. Others are more direct, or even use humour.
This one’s all about catching their vibe before you meet and seeing if it clicks with what you need.
4. How long do you usually work with people like me?
Ask what a typical timeline looks like for your goals and background.
Do most people see you for a handful of sessions, a few months, or longer? How often do you review progress and adjust the plan?
Knowing the expected arc helps you budget time and money — and recognize what progress looks like along the way.
5. What is your cancellation policy?
Clarify the notice window, fees for late cancellations or no‑shows, and how rescheduling works.
Ask about exceptions for emergencies and whether virtual or phone options are available if you can’t make it in.
This prevents surprises and helps you plan around work, caregiving, and travel.
