What is a criminologist?

The criminologist is a helping‑relationship professional whose practice lies at the intersection of criminology, psychology, sociology and justice. They support both offending individuals and victims of criminal acts, as well as persons experiencing psychosocial difficulties. Their role is to assess the person's needs, develop an intervention plan, and promote their adaptation, social integration and functioning.

Who can consult a criminologist?

Any person experiencing difficulties that impact their daily functioning can consult a criminologist. Contrary to a common belief, it is not necessary to have committed a crime. Criminologists specifically support individuals dealing with anxiety, relational difficulties, addictions, situations of intimate partner violence, victimization, mental health or adjustment issues.

What is the difference between a criminologist and a psychologist?

The psychologist addresses psychological difficulties and can provide psychotherapy. As a criminologist, I intervene on the repercussions of your situation in your daily life, relationships, environment, and social roles.

What is the difference between psychosocial support and psychotherapy?

Psychosocial support aims to accompany you in the concrete impacts your difficulties have on your daily life. We work together to develop strategies adapted to your reality, strengthen your resources, and promote your functioning. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, targets the treatment of psychological difficulties and is a specialized act.

I've never committed a crime. Can a criminologist still help me?

Absolutely. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of my clients have never committed a crime. I support individuals who experience anxiety, relational difficulties, violent situations, victimization experiences, addictions or other psychosocial challenges. My role is to help you better cope with the impacts of these difficulties on your daily life.

What is the training pathway for a criminologist?

In Quebec, the title of criminologist is a protected title. To use it, you must hold a recognized degree (typically a specialized bachelor's in criminology or an eligible master's), have completed a supervised clinical internship in intervention, and be a member of the Ordre professionnel des criminologues du Québec (OPCQ). Criminologists are subject to a code of ethics, continuing education, and oversight by their professional order to ensure public protection.
