Finding the right professional: search tips
Every provider on Promptd lives on one search page, and this guide is about using it well: going from "I need help" to two or three people genuinely worth messaging, without the overwhelm. New here? What Promptd is covers the platform itself.
On a computer, the filters sit in a sidebar beside the results; on a phone, the same filters open from the bar above them.
Start with what you need, not who you need
Here's a secret that takes the pressure off: you don't need to know whether you need a psychologist or a psychotherapist to start. Two entry points let you begin from your life instead of a job title:
- Smart filters: describe what you're looking for the way you'd say it out loud, like "Female psychologist who speaks Spanish for under 200", and the filters set themselves.
- Expertise & services: pick the concerns, services, programs, and communities that matter to you. Depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, grief, burnout, an ADHD or autism evaluation, EMDR, CBT: type it and the results show you who actually does this work.
Profession, language, format
The Profession filter covers seventeen titles, from psychologists and neuropsychologists to art therapists and family mediators. Titles matter for some needs (only certain professions can perform psychological evaluations), but for many concerns several professions do excellent work, so when in doubt, start from the concern and let the results introduce you to who addresses it.
The Languages filter finds providers who practice in your language, not ones who merely mention it: fourteen languages, from French and English to Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, and Haitian Creole.
Service location is a simple choice of Online, In-Person, or both. For in-person care, set your location and results order themselves around you, or choose See results on map and browse the city directly; the results follow wherever you pan.
Money, out in the open
Price on Promptd is not a mystery you uncover in a first phone call; it's a filter. The Price slider runs from $0 to $400 and up, with a little histogram showing where providers actually land. And no, $0 is not a mistake: many providers offer a free introductory call, which is a great low-stakes way to test the fit.
Coverage lives in two places:
- The Insurance filter lists the plans providers are pre-approved with: Medavie Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield Canada, Desjardins, Industrial Alliance (iA), and Beneva.
- Government programs like IVAC, CNESST, SAAQ, and NIHB live in Expertise & services: type the program name and pick it.
Result cards flag Reduced rates and Subsidized rates, and every profile's Services section spells out per-service prices, insurance receipts, and payment methods. If money is the deciding factor, and for many people it rightly is, you can build your whole search around it.
How ranking treats your filters (the honest version)
One thing we do differently, on purpose: when you combine a profession or community with concerns, we don't hard-filter everyone else out. Everyone who works with your concerns stays in the results, and the profiles matching your chosen profession rank first; a pill at the top, like "Psychologists first", tells you it's happening. Why? Because the best fit for you might carry a different title, and we'd rather show you a great psychotherapist than hide them behind a checkbox.
Other ways to narrow: Community (providers experienced with a specific community, like LGBTQ2S+ or immigrants), Gender, Age groups from infants to seniors, and Name when you already know who you're looking for.
Finding someone who can actually take you
The Availability filter offers Accepting new clients and Waitlist, and profiles show availability per service, sometimes with a "Next available" date.
A word in defence of waitlists: don't rule them out too fast. Wait times vary enormously, and asking costs you a two-minute message. Some of the best fits are three weeks away, not unavailable.
Reading a profile like you mean it
A profile gives you, in order: who this person is and how they work, Services with prices and availability, What I can help with, About my clients, Qualifications (with the license number and a one-click link to verify it with their professional order), Where I work, and Good to know, where providers answer the questions you were about to ask. Near the top, a response time like "Responds within 3 hours" tells you what to expect if you write.
Before messaging someone, check four things: the price and coverage work for you, their availability status, their response time, and that their page actually talks about your concern. Four green lights? Message them.
When nothing fits: three levers, in order
- Clear some filters. Drop the least important ones first: the price ceiling, then gender, then profession. Keep your concern; it's the reason you're here.
- Consider online. When local results run thin, the page adds an "Explore online options" section automatically. Online sessions remove geography from the equation entirely, and for many people they work just as well.
- Widen the area. Broaden your location, or open the map and zoom out.
Or skip all of this: Get matched
If the filters feel like one decision too many today, that's okay. Get matched is free, needs no account, and every question can be skipped: your goal, who the care is for, your top concerns, your budget, how you'd like to meet. Then a real person on our team reads your answers and emails you a fitting shortlist within 24 hours. Not an algorithm; a human who does this every day.
FAQ
Do I need an account to search?
No. Search, filter, and read every profile without one.
Why do I see other professions in my results?
Because you combined a profession with concerns, and we keep everyone who works with your concerns in the results, with your chosen profession ranked first. The pill at the top, like "Psychologists first", is your reminder. A strong fit should never be hidden by a checkbox.
Can I search for a specific person?
Yes: the Name filter.
What does "Waitlist" mean?
The provider is at capacity but keeps a list. Message them and ask how long; it's often shorter than you'd fear, and messaging a provider takes two minutes.
Is my insurance accepted?
Check the Insurance filter for private plans, and search program names like IVAC or CNESST in Expertise & services. Then confirm the details with the provider before booking; messaging providers shows how.
