About Promptd

In 2025, a therapist and a software engineer set out to raise the bar for mental health marketplaces

We looked at how people search for mental health services and thought: this could be so much better.

We bring tech to mental health so that finding the right provider feels as intuitive and personal as the experience you get on your favourite apps. Today, we represent clinics and independent mental health professionals across Montreal and its surrounding cities, in-person and online.

And we're just getting started.

What our users say

Spent close to two years trying to find a therapist. Waitlists, no callbacks, people who weren't the right fit. Ended up finding someone through Promptd in like a week.

Nadia

I run a small law firm and needed a family mediator for a case. I did not find anyone in my network so I tried Promptd and found someone pretty quickly.

Catherine

Nice to actually see prices listed upfront. Saves you from having to call around just to figure out what you can afford.

Your questions, answered

What is an autism assessment?

An autism assessment is a clinical evaluation by a psychologist, psychiatrist, developmental paediatrician, or specialist clinician that determines whether a person meets diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder. It looks at social communication, sensory sensitivities, patterns of interest, and developmental history. Approaches range from traditional deficit-focused frameworks to neurodiversity-affirming models that treat autism as a difference rather than a disorder. The report provides diagnosis, a profile of strengths and support needs, and recommendations for accommodations.

What does an autism assessment involve?

A thorough assessment typically includes a detailed developmental history interview covering early childhood and current functioning, standardized observational measures like the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), questionnaires completed by the person being assessed and often a family member, and cognitive or language testing when relevant. For adults, retrospective history is gathered since early childhood observation is not possible. Scoring, interpretation, and a feedback meeting follow the testing appointments.

How much does an autism assessment cost in Canada?

Private autism assessments typically cost 2,000 to 4,500 Canadian dollars for adults and 2,500 to 5,000 for comprehensive child assessments. Psychiatrist assessments after a physician referral are covered by provincial health plans, but psychiatrists trained to diagnose autism are relatively scarce and wait times often stretch 1 to 3 years. Psychologist-conducted assessments are not covered by provincial plans. Extended health benefits may reimburse part of psychology costs.

How long does an autism assessment take?

Direct testing usually runs 4 to 8 hours across two or three appointments, depending on age and scope. Scoring, report writing, and a feedback session add 4 to 8 weeks after testing ends. Privately, expect 2 to 6 months from first intake to final report. Public pediatric pathways often run 1 to 2 years, and public adult pathways are often longer still. Plan ahead if the report is needed for school, work, or a specific accommodation deadline.

How do I get an autism diagnosis in Canada as an adult?

Three paths exist for adults. A family doctor can refer to a psychiatrist, which is covered by provincial health but wait times can stretch 1 to 3 years, and not all psychiatrists assess autism. Private psychologists with autism-specific training can assess in weeks to months for out-of-pocket fees. Some online Canadian clinics offer formal adult autism assessments, though quality varies. Adult autism assessments usually require thorough developmental history, so preparing childhood records, school reports, and input from family members ahead of intake helps.

Why is autism often missed in women and late-diagnosed adults?

Historical autism research focused almost entirely on boys, so diagnostic criteria and the classic presentation are calibrated to male patterns. Many girls and women mask their differences through social mimicry, which leaves them exhausted but appears neurotypical to outside observers. Diagnoses at 30, 40, or later are increasingly common, often triggered by burnout, a family member receiving a diagnosis, or recognition through social media. A female therapists clinician familiar with autism in women may notice patterns other assessors miss.

Can autism and ADHD be assessed together?

Yes, and the combined battery is often more efficient than separate assessments because the two conditions share significant symptom overlap and co-occur in roughly 30 to 50 percent of autistic people (sometimes called AuDHD). Many Canadian clinicians offer combined autism plus ADHD assessment batteries for a single fee. Assessing together reduces duplicate interviews, rating scales, and cognitive testing, and produces integrated recommendations.

Should I pursue an autism assessment or a psychoeducational assessment?

An autism assessment is the right choice when social communication, sensory sensitivities, or developmental patterns are the primary question. A psychoeducational assessment focuses on learning and cognitive profile and is better when reading, writing, math, or attention are the main concerns. A narrower learning disability assessment focuses specifically on learning disorders. Many clinicians can coordinate or combine assessments when the picture is mixed.

Is getting a formal autism diagnosis worth it?

That depends on your goals. A formal diagnosis unlocks workplace accommodations, disability services at school or university, access to specialized therapies, and tax credits or disability programs in some provinces. It can also provide a clarifying framework for self-understanding. The downsides are cost, documentation in medical records, and the small risk of discrimination in insurance or immigration contexts. Some adults pursue self-identification without formal diagnosis, particularly if accommodations are not needed.

What supports follow an autism diagnosis?

Recommendations depend on age and individual needs. For children, support often includes applied behavioural therapists for skill building, speech and occupational therapy, school accommodations, and caregiver coaching. For teens and young adults, child and adolescent counselling can help with emotional regulation, school stress, and social navigation. Adults often benefit from autism-informed therapy, peer community, workplace accommodations, and sometimes sensory-focused occupational therapy. Provincial programs like the Ontario Autism Program provide structured funding for eligible children.
