About Promptd

In 2025, a therapist and a software engineer set out to raise the bar for mental health marketplaces

We looked at how people search for mental health services and thought: this could be so much better.

We bring tech to mental health so that finding the right provider feels as intuitive and personal as the experience you get on your favourite apps. Today, we represent clinics and independent mental health professionals across Montreal and its surrounding cities, in-person and online.

And we're just getting started.

What our users say

Spent close to two years trying to find a therapist. Waitlists, no callbacks, people who weren't the right fit. Ended up finding someone through Promptd in like a week.

Nadia

I run a small law firm and needed a family mediator for a case. I did not find anyone in my network so I tried Promptd and found someone pretty quickly.

Catherine

Nice to actually see prices listed upfront. Saves you from having to call around just to figure out what you can afford.

Your questions, answered

Can counselling help with depression?

Yes. Research consistently shows that approaches like cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, and behavioural activation reduce depression symptoms for most people. Many see improvement within 8 to 12 sessions. For moderate to severe depression, combining counselling with medication from a physician often produces the best results.

What type of counselling is best for depression?

CBT therapy is the most studied approach and works by targeting negative thought patterns and avoidance behaviours. DBT therapy can help when emotional intensity or self-harm is involved. Interpersonal therapy focuses on relationship difficulties that fuel depressive episodes, and behavioural activation is especially effective when low motivation is the main barrier. The best fit depends on your symptoms and goals.

What are signs of depression?

Common signs include persistent sadness or emptiness, loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, low energy, feelings of worthlessness, and withdrawal from others. Symptoms lasting two weeks or more may indicate clinical depression. If you recognize these patterns, speaking with a counsellor or your family doctor is a practical first step.

How do you help someone with depression?

Listen without trying to fix things, and avoid minimizing what they are going through. Offer practical help like finding a therapist or booking an appointment, since low energy makes logistics harder. If they are open to it, suggest exploring counselling together. Take any mention of self-harm or suicidal thoughts seriously and encourage contact with a crisis line or emergency services.

How long does depression counselling take?

Many people notice early gains within 6 to 8 sessions as routines and coping strategies take hold. Acute depression typically responds well to 8 to 16 sessions total. Timelines can extend when depression co-occurs with other concerns like grief counselling or addiction counselling. Your counsellor will set clear goals early and adjust the plan based on progress.

Do I need medication or is therapy enough for depression?

For mild to moderate depression, therapy alone is often effective. For more severe cases, research shows combining therapy with medication tends to produce better outcomes than either alone. Counsellors in Canada cannot prescribe medication but can coordinate with your family doctor or psychiatrist. The right approach depends on symptom severity, your history, and personal preference.

What if my motivation is too low to start?

Low motivation is a symptom of depression, not a personal failing, and counsellors expect it. Early sessions focus on small, manageable actions rather than big lifestyle overhauls. online therapy can reduce the friction of getting to an appointment when leaving the house feels like too much. Starting is often the hardest step, and a good therapist will pace things to your capacity.

What are 5 coping skills for depression?

Five evidence-based strategies include scheduling small meaningful activities even when motivation is low, challenging negative thought patterns, maintaining social connections despite the urge to withdraw, incorporating regular movement or exercise, and reconnecting with personal values. ACT therapy builds on that last skill by helping you identify what matters and take action aligned with it, even when depression narrows your focus.

When should I see a depression specialist instead of a general counsellor?

Consider a specialist if symptoms are severe, recurring, or have not responded to previous treatment. If symptoms began after childbirth, postpartum depression support providers offer targeted support. For teenagers showing signs of depression, teen therapists understand the developmental and social factors that general counsellors may miss. A specialist is also worth considering when depression overlaps with trauma, grief, or substance use.

Can depression come back after therapy?

Yes, depression can recur, and that does not mean therapy failed. Good counselling includes relapse-prevention strategies so you can recognize early warning signs and respond quickly. Recurrence risk increases when depression overlaps with unresolved trauma or persistent anxiety. If that applies, trauma and PTSD therapists or anxiety therapists specialists can help address those layers alongside your depression work.
