Find EMDR Therapy in Longueuil

About Promptd

In 2025, a therapist and a software engineer set out to raise the bar for mental health marketplaces

We looked at how people search for mental health services and thought: this could be so much better.

We bring tech to mental health so that finding the right provider feels as intuitive and personal as the experience you get on your favourite apps. Today, we represent clinics and independent mental health professionals across Montreal and its surrounding cities, in-person and online.

And we're just getting started.

What our users say

Spent close to two years trying to find a therapist. Waitlists, no callbacks, people who weren't the right fit. Ended up finding someone through Promptd in like a week.

Nadia

I run a small law firm and needed a family mediator for a case. I did not find anyone in my network so I tried Promptd and found someone pretty quickly.

Catherine

Nice to actually see prices listed upfront. Saves you from having to call around just to figure out what you can afford.

Your questions, answered

What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?

EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional charge. Treatment follows eight phases: history gathering, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation of positive beliefs, body scan, closure, and re-evaluation. During reprocessing, you briefly focus on a target memory while following bilateral cues such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. You do not need to describe the memory in detail for it to be processed.

Why is there a controversy with EMDR?

The debate is about mechanism, not effectiveness. Researchers agree EMDR works but disagree on exactly why bilateral stimulation helps. Some argue the eye movements are incidental and that the real benefit comes from structured exposure and cognitive restructuring. Others point to evidence that bilateral stimulation directly affects how memories are stored. This controversy does not change the clinical picture: the WHO, APA, and Veterans Affairs all endorse EMDR for trauma based on strong trial data.

Can EMDR help with anxiety?

Yes, especially when anxiety is rooted in specific experiences or memories. EMDR can help reprocess the events that trigger anxious responses so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity. It is also used for phobias, panic disorder, and performance anxiety. If anxiety is your primary concern without a clear traumatic origin, anxiety therapists specialists using other evidence-based approaches may be a more targeted starting point.

Who is not a good candidate for EMDR?

EMDR is designed for conditions connected to distressing experiences. It is unlikely to help with conditions caused by brain injury or inherited neurological factors. People experiencing active psychosis, severe dissociation, or substance use that is not yet stabilized may need preparatory work before EMDR can begin safely. Your therapist will assess readiness during intake. If symptoms are specifically related to birth trauma, postpartum depression support providers may offer more specialized intake and stabilization.

Do I need to describe my trauma in detail during EMDR?

No. This is one of the biggest differences between EMDR and traditional talk therapy. You need to identify the target memory, but you do not need to narrate it out loud or describe it in depth for the processing to work. Many people find this less overwhelming than approaches that require detailed verbal recounting. Your therapist will guide the process and monitor your comfort level throughout.

How long does EMDR therapy take?

Single traumatic events often resolve in 3 to 6 sessions. Complex or repeated trauma typically needs 8 to 12 or more. Sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes, longer than standard therapy appointments. If low mood is prominent alongside trauma, depression counselling support may help in parallel. When loss is central to the distress, grief counselling counselling can complement the work.

How much does EMDR therapy cost in Canada?

EMDR therapists in Canada typically charge standard therapy rates of $100 to $250 per hour depending on credentials and location. Because sessions often run 90 minutes, the per-session cost can be higher than a standard 50-minute appointment. Extended health insurance may cover part of the fee if the provider is a registered psychologist, social worker, or psychotherapist. Provincial healthcare rarely covers EMDR directly.

What are the side effects of EMDR?

Risks are low. Some people experience vivid dreams, temporary increases in emotional intensity, or light-headedness after sessions as the brain continues processing between appointments. These effects are usually short-lived. Your therapist will teach grounding and stabilization skills to manage any discomfort. Serious adverse effects are rare when EMDR is delivered by a properly trained clinician.

Can EMDR be done online?

Yes. Research shows that virtual EMDR produces outcomes comparable to in-person sessions. Your therapist will adapt bilateral stimulation techniques for screen-based delivery, often using guided eye movements or self-administered tapping. online therapy can make it easier to maintain weekly sessions, especially if trained EMDR providers are scarce in your area.

How do I find a qualified EMDR therapist?

Look for someone with formal EMDR training, ideally certified through EMDR Canada or EMDRIA. Canada has three certification tiers: basic trained (completed initial training), certified (50 or more clinical EMDR sessions plus 20 hours of supervision), and consultant (advanced). The tier matters most for complex trauma. If you are working through trauma symptoms more broadly, trauma and PTSD therapists specialists often incorporate EMDR alongside other evidence-based approaches.
