Your questions, answered
Do I need to file a police report to use IVAC?
No, you do not need to file a police report to apply for IVAC benefits. IVAC conducts its own investigation to determine eligibility. Many victims choose not to report crimes to police, and IVAC recognizes this. You can still access therapy with IVAC therapists and other rehabilitation services without police involvement.
Do I have to pay upfront for therapy with IVAC?
No, IVAC offers direct billing, which means your therapist bills IVAC directly and you pay nothing out of pocket. This is different from most private insurance in Canada, where you typically pay first and submit claims for reimbursement. Find therapists who accept IVAC to access this benefit.
Is there a time limit to apply for IVAC?
For domestic violence, sexual violence, and childhood abuse, there is no time limit to apply for IVAC—you can apply even decades after the crime occurred. For other crimes, you generally have 3 years from when you became aware of the harm, though exceptions may be granted. Connect with trauma therapists who can support your healing process.
What mental health professionals can I see through IVAC?
IVAC covers psychotherapy with psychologists and OPQ-licensed psychotherapists, as well as psychosocial services with social workers, psychoeducators, occupational therapists, guidance counsellors, and sexologists. The maximum reimbursement rate is $94.50 per hour. Direct victims receive sessions based on their rehabilitation plan, while family members may receive up to 30 sessions.
Who is eligible for IVAC benefits?
IVAC covers direct victims of crimes affecting physical or psychological integrity (assault, sexual violence, domestic violence, etc.), family members of victims who died or suffered serious harm, witnesses to crimes, and Good Samaritans injured while helping victims. The crime must have occurred in Quebec, or you must be a Quebec resident if it occurred elsewhere. If you are looking to address a particular issue, some good examples are Depression counselling, Anxiety therapists, or EMDR therapy therapists to start your recovery.
