Your questions, answered

What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a therapy that uses learning principles to teach skills and shape behaviour, most often in autistic children and people with developmental differences. Sessions focus on communication, social interaction, daily living, and replacement behaviours. Programs are designed and supervised by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) and delivered in home, clinic, or school settings.

What does ABA therapy help with?

ABA is most commonly used with autistic children to build communication, social, self-care, and school-readiness skills. It can also address specific behaviour concerns like aggression, self-injury, or feeding difficulties. If your child has not yet been diagnosed, an autism assessment can clarify whether ABA, another therapy, or both are appropriate starting points.

Is ABA therapy only for autism?

No. ABA is best known for autism because of the strongest evidence base there, but the same methods are used with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, brain injury recovery, and specific behaviour concerns in children and adults. That said, many ABA clinics in Canada focus exclusively on autism services, so confirm scope and age range before booking.

Why is ABA therapy controversial?

Some autistic self-advocates have criticized traditional ABA for focusing on reducing visible autistic traits rather than supporting the person. In response, many providers now practice neurodiversity-affirming ABA that prioritizes consent, the ability to withdraw assent, and functional goals chosen with the family. Asking how a provider handles consent, what outcomes they measure, and whether they work with autistic adults on the team is a reasonable way to vet fit.

What is a BCBA, and who delivers ABA sessions?

A Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) assesses the child, designs the program, and supervises staff. Day-to-day sessions are usually run by a Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT) or Instructor Therapist who works directly with the child under BCBA oversight. The BCBA reviews session data, adjusts goals, and meets with caregivers regularly.

How many hours of ABA therapy are needed?

Focused intervention programs run 10 to 20 hours per week for specific goals. Comprehensive programs for young children with broader learning needs can run 25 to 40 hours per week. Your BCBA recommends intensity based on assessment results, age, and family capacity. Fewer hours delivered consistently usually outperform higher hours that cannot be sustained.

Is ABA therapy covered by OHIP or insurance in Canada?

ABA is not covered by OHIP or most provincial health plans. In Ontario, families may access funding through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP), and other provinces have their own autism funding programs with differing eligibility. Some private insurance plans cover partial costs under extended health benefits. Ask each provider which funding sources they accept and whether they help families navigate applications.

Can ABA therapy be done at home or only in a clinic?

Both are common in Canada. Clinic or centre-based programs offer structured environments with more therapist support, specialized materials, and peer interaction opportunities. Home-based ABA helps skills generalize to daily routines and works well for families with young children, transportation barriers, or sensory needs that make clinic settings harder. Some providers offer hybrid schedules that combine the two.

How are caregivers involved in ABA therapy?

Parent and caregiver training is a core part of most ABA programs. Caregivers learn strategies to reinforce skills across home routines, respond to challenging behaviours, and coordinate with school staff so gains carry over. Regular meetings with the BCBA review progress, adjust targets, and troubleshoot issues as they come up.

How do we know if ABA is the right option for our child?

ABA is one option among several. It tends to be most indicated for young autistic children with significant communication or skill-building needs, but speech therapy, occupational therapy, and play-based approaches may fit better for other profiles. A child therapists therapist can help weigh options if ABA does not feel like the right starting point, or support co-occurring emotional and social needs alongside an ABA program.
