Your questions, answered
What is family therapy?
Family therapy supports communication, boundaries, and problem-solving across caregivers and children. Sessions map patterns, clarify roles, and teach skills for calmer conversations. Plans may include brief parent coaching and routines for home. If the main challenge is primarily between partners, Couples therapists may be a better starting point.
How does it work?
Therapists balance voices and create a process for turn-taking and repair. You will practice new moves in session, then apply them at home with simple checklists. Coordination with schools or other providers happens with consent.
What issues can it help?
Common concerns include communication breakdowns, transitions, behavior, and stress from work or health changes. Therapy helps families build rituals, solve conflicts earlier, and share responsibilities more fairly. When children need individual support, Child therapists may also be involved, and Teen therapists can provide specialized support for adolescents. If attention and executive-function stress is driving conflict at home, ADHD therapists support may help alongside family work.
How many sessions will we need?
Many families see change in 6–12 weeks with consistent practice. Frequency starts weekly or biweekly and tapers as skills take hold. Your plan includes relapse-prevention and ways to refresh skills after busy seasons.
How do we start?
An intake gathers history, strengths, and goals from each member. The therapist proposes a fair process, sets rules for safety, and provides first-week actions to try at home.
